The foundation

A place for innovation right from the start: the Knorr-Bremse headquarters was designed more than a century ago by the Swedish architect Alfred Grenander, one of the great innovators and key designers of modern Berlin. At the beginning of the 20th century, he built around 70 subway stations throughout the city. Many of them are now regarded as landmarks of Berlin. One of his greatest masterpieces is the Knorr-Bremse building in Friedrichshain. This foundation is revived to the same high-standard set by Grenander and will create a building that is more efficient and exemplary compared to other sustainable new buildings.

Thinking beyond innovation

The structure

Previously known as the Knorr-Bremse headquarters and built in 1913-16, there are few places in Berlin where modernism has left such significant traces in industrial architecture. To this day, the building complex consists of two listed units: an administrative section and a former production area. The three striking inner courtyards now form the starting point for the ambitious conversion work that considers the defining details and design elements – from the grand ceiling heights and numerous sandstone reliefs in the striking facades.
